Hydroxytest, also known as hydroxytestosterone, is a modified form of the anabolic steroid testosterone. It was first synthesized in the 1950s when research into altering testosterone was gaining traction. However, Hydroxytest never gained much popularity or widespread use compared to other oral steroids.

It was never approved for therapeutic use or widely prescribed medically. Hydroxytest remained an obscure experimental performance-enhancing drug without formal clinical indications. Availability was extremely limited even on the black market.

Chemical Structure

The chemical structure of Hydroxytest is testosterone modified with a hydroxy group attached at carbon-4 and a methyl group at carbon-17 alpha. The 4-hydroxylation was intended to reduce estrogenic and androgenic activity compared to testosterone.

The 17-alpha methylation aimed to enable oral administration by allowing it to bypass first-pass liver metabolism. However, it also likely made the compound hepatotoxic.

Perceived Effects

Very little data exists on Hydroxytest regarding its pharmacology and effects in humans. However, it was perceived to exhibit moderate anabolic effects with reduced androgenic activity compared to testosterone.

The chemical modifications were likely intended to create an oral steroid retaining anabolic properties but with lowered side effects. However, its real-world effects were never thoroughly documented.

Drawbacks and Decline

While Hydroxytest was created to be a more “optimized” oral testosterone, any advantages appear to have been minimal or non-existent. By the 1970s, it had already faded into obscurity in favor of other more promising oral steroids like Anadrol or Dianabol.

The questionable oral bioavailability, unknown toxicity, limited availability, and mediocre effects rendered Hydroxytest essentially obsolete before it ever gained any momentum. It was likely also surpassed by injectable testosterone which had fewer constraints.

In summary, Hydroxytest represented another failed oral testosterone experiment that never came close to replacing pure testosterone. Even in its time, better options existed for physique enhancement, and knowledge has only improved since then.
